Melbourne

Melbourne, the most liveable city in the world for five years running, is a fascinating place full of pleasant surprises. It has one of the most diverse cultural backgrounds with more than 150 languages spoken and a large portion of its population has overseas roots. It has the most efficient & effective public transport system out of all the cities.

Melbourne is Australia’s cultural capital, with Victorian-era architecture,
extensive shopping, museums, galleries, theatres, and large parks and gardens.
Its 4-million residents are both multicultural and sports-enthusiasts.
Melbourne’s cultural vibrancy can be found in its maze of hidden laneways,
opulent bars, exclusive restaurants or off-the-beaten-track boutiques. You can
soak up culture, hit the sporting grounds, taste the dynamic food and wine
scene, dance til late or wander the parks and leafy streets. Visit Federation
Square, Melbourne’s landmark cultural area, and enjoy a sunset beer on the St
Kilda promenade. Shop till you drop on funky Brunswick Street or upmarket
Chapel Street. Walk Southbank’s cafes, bistros and bars and get a global tour
of cuisines in Carlton, Richmond or Fitzroy. Take an Aboriginal Heritage
Walk via the Royal Botanic Gardens and cheer with a full house at
the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Upside
From the very first moment you take a walk in
Melbourne’s CBD, you get a sense that the city’s
economic activity is frenetic, with retail stores, markets,
restaurants, cafes and bars bustling with people
and stores open from Monday through to Sunday.
The lively activities justify why Melbourne offers
more job opportunities than any other
destination in Australia.

Keep in mind...
Melbourne’s weather can be a little erratic. It has cool to mild winters compared to Europe and warm and dry summers. It can be hot one day and a refreshing cool change could come along the very same day, before resuming the hot summer weather the next day.

Sydney

Sydney is the most populated city in Australia. It is on Australia’s south-east

coast, on the Tasman Sea. The greater metropolitan area has an approximate

population of nearly 5 million people. Locals of Sydney are called

Sydneysiders, comprising a cosmopolitan and international composition of

people. Sydney is famous for its iconic Sydney Opera House and the Sydney

Harbour Bridge.

The vicinity of the metropolitan area is surrounded by national parks, and the
coastal regions feature numerous bays, rivers, inlets and iconic beaches,
including the renowned Bondi and Manly beaches. Within the city there are a
number of leafy parks, including Hyde Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Sydney is regularly featured as a high-ranking world city for quality of life.
The main airport serving Sydney is Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport and its
main port is Port Botany.

Upside
Sydney also has an important industrial and
economic framework. In fact, it is home to 60 of the
100 most important companies of Australia.
It represents 25% of the economic activity,
including activities such as services,
manufacturing, fashion, finances or mining.

Keep in mind
Sydney’s weather is warm in summer and comfortable in winter, far from the winters we are used to in other parts of the world. However, it rains a lot all year long.

Sydney

Brisbane

Brisbane is Australia’s New World City, a multi-cultural hub of creativity and

invention that provides students with forward-thinking educational providers

and world-class research facilities, all in a sub-tropical climate ideal for an

outdoor lifestyle. It is also the capital city of the sunshine state, Queensland.

Brisbane is home to over 2.2 million people. It has a humid sub-tropical
climate with warm to hot and humid summers and dry moderately warm
winters. Brisbane offers world-class education along with a high quality,
accessible lifestyle – especially if you compare living expenses and tuition
costs with other developed countries.

Brisbane is a safe and friendly city with a beautiful climate, outdoor lifestyle
and a generous community spirit.

Upside
There are beaches in nearby destinations perfect
for surfing and it is very close to
beautiful natural landscapes. A feature is the
Brisbane River sights and its surrounding
skyscrapers. It is still a fairly big city and
is relatively close to small paradises, like
Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast or Byron Bay.

Keep in mind
There are some downsides that should be
considered when comparing Brisbane to other
Australian cities. It has a higher unemployment
rate than Sydney and Melbourne, and
the possibilities of finding a job, especially a
skilled job, are substantially lower than that
of those the two cities previously mentioned.

Brisbane

Byron Bay

It is a magical place; at the very first moment you enter the town, you feel you are

in a “100% Australian authentic” town. Cape Byron is Australia most easterly

point, located on the north coast of New South Wales. It is a town that grabs your

attention with its numerous beaches, unspoilt hinterland, and relaxed lifestyle,

Byron Bay is a one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations.

Byron Bay has always been a mecca for a diverse range of creative and alternative
cultures. Also known as the rainbow region, the area in and around Byron is considered
to be the spiritual home of Australia's hippy movement. Internationals of all types have
been attracted to Byron Bay due to its outstanding natural beauty and laid-back lifestyle
which promotes an unrivalled positive energy.

It is said to be one of the best bays to surf, with important and long-lasting waves. The
surfing tradition of the place dates back to many decades ago and you can sense the surf
culture in every corner.

It is a town that grabs your attention with its numerous beaches, unspoiled hinterland
and relaxed lifestyle. Byron Bay is a one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations.

Upside
Byron Bay is an art-loving town; you breathe
art everywhere. You can find artists
presenting their work in the streets, and
almost all restaurants and bars have live
music. You can consider Byron a hippy town,
and this is in line with surrounding towns,
as only a few kilometres away, you’ll find
Nimbin, considered one of the world’s
birthplaces of the hippy movement.

Keep in mind...
The main downside like other smaller towns or
regions relates to travellers who would
prefer to remain longer term in their chosen
destination. It is a small town;
many of the jobs available are of an
unskilled nature. Even so, not as many
opportunities exist, as competition is fierce
due to the large amount of travellers in and
around the area.

Byron Bay

Gold Coast

Gold Coast is another place you have to visit when in Australia. It is located

in the East coast of the country, right by the border between Queensland and

New South Wales. In this coastal town, you can find almost every good

Australia has to offer!

From the iconic Surfers Paradise beach to the sophisticated dining precincts of Main Beach
and Broadbeach and out to the lush, green Hinterland, there’s a new experience waiting for
you at every turn on the Gold Coast. Theme parks, world-renowned beaches and year-
round sunshine are just a few of the reasons 10.5 million visitors flock to this vibrant city
each year - a destination which is as scenic and peaceful as it is fast paced and active.
After catching some waves, or enjoying the best natural parks just a few kilometres away,
you can enjoy the excellent restaurants and night clubs that close a little bit later than
others.

Many people think the tallest buildings are in Sydney or Melbourne. That is correct;
however, the tallest building of all is Q1, built on the Gold Coast.

Upside
In the last few years, tourism has grown. It is
inevitable due to the attractiveness of the
region. Without a doubt, it is a perfect
destination to spend your holidays or study
for a short period of time.

Keep in mind...
It is important to highlight that the job
opportunities are fewer than in other
bigger cities, not only because of quantity, but
also because of the lack of skill aspect
they require.

Gold Coast

Perth

Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, is the fourth largest city in Australia and

home to 1.9 million people.

The region has enjoyed flourishing economic growth primarily driven by the mining
and resources industry. As the results, it is not surprising for Perth (WA) to become the
state with the lowest unemployment rate and wages have also been on the upward trend.

Perth is a vibrant, energetic city that offers a truly unique Western Australian
experience. Immerse yourself in a diverse mix of city culture and stunning nature, from
Perth’s burgeoning bar scene and open arts festivals, to its world-class beaches and
expansive parklands.

Upside
You can move around the city free of charge
using public transport. This is an important
component and at the same time attraction,
as in many other main cities, public
transport is expensive.

Keep in mind...
Perth is rather isolated from the rest of Australia,
separated by thousands of kilometers
of desert from the other capital cities. Perth also
has a rising cost of living, correlating with the
recent economic boom experienced.

Perth

Noosa Heads

Noosa is a quiet town, perfect for relaxing and living the authentic Australian

experience. Whether its spotting koalas hanging out up high in gum trees,

sightseeing the various rivers, hiking or enjoying its spectacular water

channels, in Noosa you will be immersed by the Australian nature and

wildlife.

This corner of Australia combines the purity of a remote place coupled with the
activity one would expect from an urbanized city. Spectacularly, you will find a
national park featuring amazing nature and Australian wildlife situated right in the
heart of the town and on the door step of the main street where you can find the best
restaurants, stores and bars the town has to offer.

Its beaches are perfect for surfing for either beginners or experts. It is a perfect place
to spend your holidays; not only can you surf, but you can also dive, water ski
and jet ski.

It doesn't matter what the excuse is; Noosa Heads is one of Australia’s treasures
worth visiting.

Upside
Many people arrive to this beautiful destination
for a vacation and enjoy going shopping
in its many little shops where you can find
almost everything.

Keep in mind...
The weather is subtropical, with plenty of rainfall
and heat, even so, that is the essence
of Noosa and what facilitates the unique
natural surroundings it offers.

Noosa Heads

Hobart

Hobart offers a contrasting blend of heritage, scenery and culture, with world

class activities and attractions nearby. It's no wonder Lonely Planet has

called Hobart one of the top ten spots to visit in the world right now.

Hobart is Tasmania's capital city and the second oldest capital in Australia,
after Sydney. Located at the entrance to the Derwent River, its well-preserved
surrounding bushland reaches close to the city centre while beaches line the
shores of the river and estuary beyond.

With its captivating history, picturesque waterways, rugged mountains and
gourmet experiences, the city has something for everyone.

Upside
Tasmania is one the most privileged islands
from nature’s perspective, with more than
2,000 kms of road and more than 18 natural parks.

Keep in mind...
On the flipside, it rains a lot and it is has by far
the coolest climate of all of Australia. If we go
even further south, we’ll encounter Antarctica.

Hobart

Darwin

Darwin is the state capital of the Northern Territory.

Darwin is the most northern of Australian cities. It is also the Gateway to some of
Australias most breathtaking National Parks. It has balmy weather and is a
melting pot of food and culture and regularly has many outdoor festivals
and markets

Another attraction of the city is its indigenous aboriginal population. Aboriginal
people were the first to live in this country, thousands of years before the arrival of
Western culture. We firmly suggest learning more about the indigenous people to
get a better understanding of their rich and unique culture.

Upside
It is a city with almost an endless summer
with a totally tropical landscape. Lots of
sunny days and high temperatures make it
a calm and happy place.

Keep in mind...
The intense heat of one of the Northern
cities of Australia and the difficulties
of being able to enjoy a beach day
due to the fauna hazards.

Darwin

Adelaide

Adelaide is the state capital of South Australia. It is a smaller and quieter city

than the other capital cities.

Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, is dubbed the wine city and has been
living up to its reputation by producing some of the best wines in the southern
hemisphere. Adelaide’s population is sitting at around 1.3 million.

Adelaide is the most affordable major city in the inland Australia. It is also rated the
fifth most liveable city in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit in 2015.
Climate wise, Adelaide has a warm Mediterranean climate where most of the rain falls
in the winter months.

Another attraction is all the available tours from the capital of South Australia, mainly
Kangaroo Island or Port Lincoln, where you can swim with sea lions, dolphins and
tuna fish, and for those who dare, even swim in a cage with the great white shark.

Upside
Some know it as the “20 minute city”, stating
you can go from one side of the city to the
exact opposite in less than 20 minutes. It is a
city full of parks and surrounded by nature,
without forgetting its amazing beaches
that are close by.

Keep in mind...
Because it is in the south, there is an important
difference between winter and summer,
with unpredictable temperatures, mainly very
cold in winter and very high in summer.

Adelaide

Cairns

Cairns is the most northern city of Australia’s east coast. It is also the starting

point of boat trips going to visit the largest coral reef of the world,

the “Great Barrier Reef”.

The city is located in the tropical region of Australia, thus, it is surrounded by an
abundance of unique wilderness of an exquisite nature. Dangerous Australian wildlife
co-exists with the usual residents. In the north of the town, you will find the Daintree River,
where you can see huge crocodiles and bull sharks. You can also find the most dangerous
bird, the Cassowary.

The flora and fauna you can see there is unique and unlike any other place in the
world, with thousands of sea animals, sharks and molluscs.

Upside
Leaving wildlife aside, Cairns has an endless
summer. Many young people take the
opportunity to stop by and go out in
one of its night clubs.

Keep in mind...
The natural beauty of the area must be
considered along with the limited job
opportunities for those who seek a place
to live longer-term in Australia.
